Redefining Quality Education
by Cinderela Antoniette A. Tojeno
As Martin Luther King Jr. stated, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and thinking critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education.” This means that both personal development and social advancement are built on the foundation of a high-quality education. Moreover, education also fosters complete human thought activity, creativity, emotional intelligence, and most importantly, ethics. On my journey as a student at the University of San Jose—Recoletos, Basak Campus, I joined the SHS Junior Alert organization, where I served as a first-aid responder. Through our training and service responsibilities and this inclusive approach to learning, I could already understand the relationship between knowledge, action, and ethical responsibility, which ultimately helped me improve to become more responsible and participate as a member of my community. Education directly influences our philosophical outlook on life by establishing virtues such as understanding and responsibility. Therefore, those who can experience true transformation as a result of receiving an outstanding educational experience that promotes the development of their minds and souls are better prepared to contribute to society in the future.
It is but worth mentioning that quality education doesn't come without such hurdles. Many student learners who are from resource-poor homes have more barriers and difficulties in attaining such academic achievements. Furthermore, the goal of encouraging schools to cultivate innovative thinking fully is hampered by the insufficiency of resources, foregoing modern teaching methods, and such emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches, which irritate an integrated approach to learning whereby subjects are taught in uncorrelation. Where this can prevent students from seeing connections between ideas and holistically applying knowledge. While the solutions remain, governments are trying to address these problems, but there is still a lengthy way to tackle such educational inequality. This is more pronounced in the region of low-income and rural populations, where students tend to be deprived of technological and learning comforts. For example, such as resource insufficiency and the old style of teaching, further complicate attaining quality education. Therefore, these difficulties cause inequity, and only quite a few end up gaining from a few benefits fully.
Since the pandemic started on March 11, 2019, the “NCOV-19 (Novel Corona Virus 19)” or “COVID-19” has led to an online modality shift in education delivery for this reason due to the technological revolution, for the safety and well-being of the students. The advent of online classes, educational applications, and interactive tools makes it easier for one to learn or teach an online course than ever before. But, this modality shift leads to such unfair access to technology, however, this remains a significant obstacle since not all students can fully benefit from these developments.
As an aspiring pediatrician and a determined student who wants to achieve my dream profession, I see a direct connection between health and quality education. Additionally, fostering an atmosphere where learning may occur requires improving health literacy, particularly for parents and kids. I may therefore make up for the lack of understanding about how health affects learning by advising the families to prioritize their children's academic and physical well-being. I will use my persuasive speaking skills and ideas to advocate for the interconnection of knowledge resources for all children, especially those living in low-income communities so that no child is left forgotten.
To sum it up, a better society requires an effective learning system or a quality education to function well, although barriers to education will take the joint efforts of communities, governments, and educational providers. Hence, these problems are addressed, technology is adopted, and equality is pursued so a better, safer world would be achieved and every learner is nurtured and developed and becomes an asset to society.
